Remember the Serenity Prayer?
"God grant me the wisdom to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
Anxiety and worry can present a kind of low level fear that can cause a buzz in the tummy or a pain in the head. Itchy skin. Habits like chewing gum, smoking, biting the lip, chewing our fingernails. When I am overwhelmed by that low level life stuff reality worry, I unconsciously rub my tongue against the back of my bottom front teeth, usually slicing my tongue open after a time. When I notice my tongue is cut, that's when I realize just how stressed I have been. I do it unconsciously, in an attempt to soothe myself.
I am talking about the daily worries most of us have. Many of them, for me, are things I have no control over! But I worry anyway. And, have come to realize, that in many cases, worry itself is a bad habit! I know that it is not necessary that I respond with worry, but I do it anyway.
Some things are worrisome, but we know what we must do to address them--those are the things we can change!
But what about the ones we cannot really control? Situations with our grown kids, aging parents, friends or loved ones with unhealthy habits or challenging life situations? How do we respond to those things we know we cannot change, but that we worry about nevertheless?
