I've heard of this. In fact, my grandmother passed on the info about birds hanging around as a sign to me when I was little (about 9 or 10 years old). I know she believed it as I remember her getting upset about a bird hanging outside her bedroom window for several days and constantly "singing." I remember she wondered out loud "who died," which prompted me to ask what she was talking about. I think it would be easy to mark it off as an old wives' tale or some superstition, but I personally think there is something to it. I know it freaks me out whenever I have a bird hanging about the house--enough so that I start calling relatives "just to say hello."
