funny how you have already listed my favorites. I never thought to group them all together as 'progressive' I just thought they were 'different' and that is why I liked them. but yeah, the common thread is better music, meaningful stories in the lyrics, longer songs ( forget the 3.5 minute pop formula) I can't wait to get more into this so I'll be back!

Hi Phil, I love music of all types...especially if it is live. I have no idea who I like that falls into this category. I suppose this may be a good place to learn. I am always adding bands to my list of favorites.

Among the best concerts I saw last summer were Heart, Earth wind & fire, and The Fray. I don't know if they are progressive but their lyrics and music move me.

A couple of bands I have been introduced to recently are Arcade Fire and Breaking Benjamin. I love the energy and power in their music.

BTW, if I am an atrocious match to your group, feel free to give me the boot.

Love many of the bands listed . This is a rock genre that produced ALBUMS , right ? Maybe we should do a post of great progressive albums too .

Just to make sure I've got the label right, Todd Rundgren and the Alan Parsons Project are progressive artists . How about Annie Haslam and Renaissance ? Are the Roches too folksy to be progressive ?

No.

The only problem I have with all this is that this is so.......70's. Not only did I listen to this stuff, I played it on the radio (for the time I was on).

For better or worse, I have moved on. Much of this stuff is excellent to listen to but only in dribs and drabs. I still have my albums (vinyl) and have shlepped them with me all these years. There are a few that still stand up after all these years, though.

That's right uun1, a lot of Progressive rock received very little air time due to the length of their recordings. Some bands gave in and recorded shorter radio friendly versions. You're also right about the music having more meaning and was considered an artform, just look at the album covers. Today, the music business is just another corporate entity and like almost everything else it's quantity over quality. Greetings Discaimer, I believe you're my neighbor north of the desert. Love Alan Parsons, saw him and Yes a few years back. I think Annie Haslam and The Renaissance and The Roches had more of a folk vibe but she did collaborate with Genesis at one point.

Nick mentioned Dave Mason`s Alone together album.Still have that after all these years. Saw Mason last summer, he is still great.

Hi walkinman, Welcome, I agree with you and Nick about Dave Mason and I'm still listening to J.Geils as well. Everytime I walk away from this music I alway's end up coming back, I guess it was such a part of my life growing up and today's music seems to get " progressively " worse.
