Praying has sometimes been difficult for me. I was taught the Lord's Prayer when I was very young, but always felt that sticking to JUST that left much to be desired . . . It was a prayer that I repeated so frequently that it lost all passion. It felt stilted. But then . . . how should I pray? For years then my prayers were little more than a nightly request list. Again, something was lacking. It didn't dawn on me until much later in life that there is an entire book of the bible dedicated to prayers and praise in SONG. Here I was, a music major that grew up in church affiliated schools reading and memorizing Psalms . . . but it hadn't really HIT me. All of a sudden I heard songs in a completely different way. No longer was I simply listening to a pretty tune with nice words. I was listening to a prayer . . . I was singing a prayer . . . and I finally FELT like I was praying.
I would love to know what songs of prayer and praise have touched your hearts. What songs have helped your soul reach out to God.
