The bravery of all those who stormed the beaches astonishes me still, after all these years...men...boys...who had girlfriends, wives, jobs...private sector people--not career soldiers-- who stood up to the plate when the chips were down and the odds very long. Just unbelievable. And we'll always wonder: what if Ike had felt that the losses would've been too great, so held up the invasion a day...or two...or three....heavens! We might be writing in German.
