Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" is up for a bunch of Tony Awards tonight. SP happens to be my favorite musical. Whenever I have a chance to see it, i buy a ticket. I've seen a couple high school productions, a couple community theater productions, and at the dinner theater.
Of course the movie with Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi. Who can forget supporting cast members Ray Walston and Juanita Hall - both taking their roles from stage to screen as Luther Bills and Bloody Mary
It is my favorite because it confronts institutional racism. Nellie Forbush makes a huge character reversal from being an unwitting racist to being accepting of DeBeque and his mixed race children.
"You've Got to be Carefully Taught" sung by Lt. Cable.
There was a segment on CBS's Sunday Morning. The cast had a discussion with high school kids in New York, something that wouldn't have happened in the 1950s.
Any thoughts?
What are your favorite musicals that have made the successful transition from stage to screen?
