The only thing I saw in my yard today was a fat squirrel waiting for me to feed it! : )

One night I heard a crash from my side yard, so I went onto the back deck and looked about 6 feet away at my shed and the BIGGEST BLACK BUTT I had ever seen was sticking out of my shed, with the shed door tore off the hinges and on the ground!

Seems my kids had put the ice chest away without emptying it and this bear had followed his nose. I live about 45 minutes from Yosemite National Park and yes, we have our share of bears in California too! (I have a broken shed to prove it, lol)

I guess I had overlooked CA's bears. Very Sorry. You even have one on the state flag if I remember ... We are having a big bear year throughout southcentral Alaska. Your story creates a vivid image ... biggest bear butt ... but let's not go there! In bear country anywhere, putting highly fragrant food stuffs away properly is very important. Thanks for the note.

Washington has bears too. I live in Bellevue (a few miles east of Seattle), and every year there are instances of bears, cougar, coyote, deer etc. in peoples yards, mine included. My daughter's elementary school has been in lock down several times because a cougar was spotted just outside the playground. I love the fact that there's lots of wild life, but then I was raised with it. Everyone else freaks and calls the game department to come and capture.

Hi Carol ... I guess I hadn't thought that bears would be in Bellevue ... maybe in Carnation or Snohomish. I know deer are anywhere, and bears will probably follow them. It is a challenge sometimes to find ways to have mutual compatibility with wildlife and people.
