Asking is a good way to be reasonably sure (as much as you can) if you need to know early in the game. I'd relax and enjoy the flirt, don't vest too much emotion into the situation and, if the feeling of attraction is mutual, then what the heck?

I was always a lousy dater myself but this is the advice I'd take if someone told me ;-)

leavnsoon--you're preachin' to the choir. It's all new to me, too, and learning the rules proves to be, um, perplexing at times. It's good to see the guys input here. I would have said the same--ask. I would also agree with kicking back and just enjoying it a bit. If you don't invest too much emotionally, you won't lose much if it doesn't pan out to anything. My one caveat above what the guys are saying: THEY seem to come on VERY strong initially. Take THAT with a grain of salt and a wink, maybe. ; )

HI Leavnsoon - I think Robyn's advice is dead on (although I am fairly new to this also, so what do I know??). Have fun with it and assume it is only a fun flirtation. Give it time to see if things progress or taper off. Of course, nothing wrong with asking straight out if you are really attracted to somebody, but of course, be ready to hear that the feeling is not mutual (or the person just disappears.. yes, I suspect even over '40 people still do that to each other). Us guys are not that hard to figure out. If we are just flirting with women, that's all we want for now. So like the others have said just enjoy it. If he want to get serious, he will tell you. If you want to get serious and he hasn't said anything, let him know where you are coming from. Guys appreciate honesty. Guys also enjoy some good ol' flirting.

If the flirting continues past say 1/2 hour, then I would take that as a sign that there might be a conneciton and the next step could be taken.
