Do they migrate, and when? And is the 4:1 sugar water the best thing to feed them?
COMMENT

I am not sure if they migrate ..In my yard ..one day they are here..the next they are gone till next spring..
I have always taken 1 sugar x 3 water..boil to make sure it blends ..cool in frifge overnite and then just refill feeders (room Temp)...
I don't know why this happens ..but when I hang a 1/2 orange out near the feeders, I seem to get more birds comming in.
Thanks for the tips BadFrog. There were just too many different versions of the water/suger mix on google, so I wanted to check with one who knows.

Your welcome..
Hummingbirds do migrate from New England anyways. They are attracted to anything red especially flowers shaped like a horn. We always know when they come back in the spring because they come to where we hang one the feeders at a window and look in as if to say "hey, where's the food".
Hummingbirds migrate from Minnesota, too. We only have ruby throated hummingbirds here. We've had some cold night already in September, but I still have hummingbirds at the feeder. I keep the feeders up through September so any migrating birds can stop and get a meal.
Once I was sitting outside wearing a shirt with a floral pattern. A hummingbird stopped in front of me, zigged and zagged, trying to figure out if I was a flower garden, so close to me that I could have reached out and touched it.

Me too! I was wearing a red vest and I heard the buzzing-humming sound and it was a humming bird having a look at me. I was in the mountains, above tree-line, in an area covered in white heather, so the red vest must have stood out.
