Front page this morning in our San Francisco Chronicle:

"Intrepid UC students unlock secret of how hummingbirds chirp."

A scientific breakthrough accomplished by two avid (and academic) birders through dedicated, rigorous field research.

In spite of an abiding fascination with hummingbirds I've never been fortunate enough to hear the "chirp," but at least know now how such delicate sound is produced.

The article is worth reading.
