As soon as they can use binoculars thewy can start "birding." But even before that you could let them look through a telescope if you have one or can borrow one. Some larger birds can be seen clearly with the naked eye: jays, robins, flickers and to point out such a bird at the feeder and then point to the the picture in your field guide is a great way to start them out...maybe evenm get them to keep a list. If youlive where thgere's a real winter and snow you can place a winter feeder quite close to a window and even finches, nuthatches and juncos become easy to see.

One other idea is to let them watch occasional videos of birds which are always shot so the birds are easy to see. And you might find some local spots where there are ducks or geese you can, perhaps even feed. A gang of Canada Geese in a park or at a golf course can be exciting for kids.

IN the summer hand a hummingbird feeder outside a window in your house: you'll get Ruby-throated for sure. And in the slring help them listen to bird songs in your yard: Carolina Wren, Cardinal, Mockingbird, Robin, Catbird, Crow, Blue Jay, Red-shouldered Hawk, et al. Children often are much more sophisticated at hearing than spotting tiny objects, and you don't need any aids to listen to bird song. You can even play...name that tune with them.
