This fine photo of a young Elegant Tern in flight was taken by birder Glen Nevill at San Francisco's Pier 14. This year there have plenty of ocean fish nearshore and daily there are flocks of Brown Pelicans and Elegant Terns around the Bay and along the ocean beaches.
The narrow, sharp, yellow beak, the long, narrow, swerpt-back, pointed wings, the forked tail. A few of the longer wing feathers edged in black. A truly elegant tern even when hundreds are swirling around making their grating "cree-ack" noise. The white at the base of the beak indicates this is likely a first-year bird as most adlts have black crowns.
Thanks for the great shot, Glenn.
