As I read the description of this group, I am somewhat disturbed. While I think the topic of the generation gap is a great one. (We certainly felt one, back in the day). Nonetheless I feel the description is rather dismissive of the current millennial generation. The description reads as follows:
The over 40 demographic is huge and yet we have very little influence on the culture. The younger generations seem dismissive and antagonistic and condescending. Why do we allow it? Can we take the culture back?
In my opinion we have made this mess and part of the reason is that by virtue of our numbers, we have dominated everything for a very long time - the economic, the music scene, the movie and television market, what drugs do you see advertised on tv, etc. Can you imagine growing up now and having to still hear all that 70s rock and roll, have Marilyn Monroe and James Dean still be the Hollywood icons, have to hear about the Viet Nam war and how a previous generation handled things over and over and over?
Think back to our generations' attitude toward the Eisenhower years - Now who was dismissive and antagonistic? Times change and it is time for the boomers to let go of their monopolistic hold on all things culture.
Yes, i know it is scary - we always feel we know the best, and do things the best, but a little sharing and a little compassion could go a long way. Personally, I don't think we can take something back that we have never relinquished.
