When I was growing up back in the '50s, all my grandparents lived within 30 miles of us, and my parents took us to visit them almost every week while they were still living. Extended family get togethers for Sunday afternoon dinner at Grandma's house was the rule that was rarely broken. And I have very fond memories of the time spent with them and the aunts and uncles.
But how times have changed in 50 years! My oldest daughter and my grand-daughter (who is about to turn 8 years old in a few weeks,) live about 700 miles away in Vermont.
They try to get down to visit me once or twice a year. And I used to drive up there for a week every summer.
But now that I'm divorced and my two younger teenage daughters are not as anxious to make the trip with me, making the drive alone would seem so much longer that I'm not sure I can do it next month.
I really hate to even consider flying -a "post-911" phobia of mine- unless it were an emergency.
The problem becomes that I don't feel my grandchild -who seems to be an awfully lot like me- is getting to spend enough time with me for her to ever get to really know me like I wish she could.
Can e-mails and digital photos really take the place of sitting at the Sunday dinner table together ??
Do any of you have similar situations? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
