Portrait of an Alzheimer's Patient was demeaning and demoralizing. Robert Griegoliet immortalizes Grandpa in a way I hope no family member would do to me. My Dad died with ALZ. My MIL is 92 with it. To remember them as such and to introduce them to the public in this manner is not a documentary but an assault on that one's dignity.

Ronald Reagan was shielded from the public eye for ten years. We remember him as he was, not what this disease made him become.

It reminds me of the tabloids publishing a near death picture of Michael Landon in a blatant attempt to destroy his image.

It's interesting, I totally agree that that particular work doesn't show any respect for the subject, but I'm personally not sure that keeping anyone out of the public eye is the answer to treating people with dignity.

There was a tactful way to approach his grandfather's illness while still being in the public eye, but that piece did not, in my opinion demonstrate it.

Thanks, Brian for your response. Part of my critique was most likely flared with personal opinion. Even the background voices were not kind and loving so I saw no positivity in the clip at all. I do intend to view other pieces and I am sure I will find favor in the value of the category and educational purpose of some of them. These are for PBS and I don't think shock value is what you are aiming for.

Dammit, Dad! was short and to the point about decision regarding placement in a facility outside of the home. In this case it was just a move to an assisted living quarter which still may mean a great deal of opposition from the parent.

With the attitude of the son, it was a favorable move for the Dad, perhaps even unbeknownst to him.

The clip failed to point out why the father needed care, although I noted his shirt was tattered and torn and perhaps just overseeing this aspect in care was too much for the son to take responsibility for.

It would have been beneficial to know the condition that warranted this move. Sometimes it is done with only the intent of establishing Power of Attorney without the parent's consent.

I really did like the clip and gave it a 4, but I think it left more questions than answered them. Of course, a documentary should make one think and it should guide our mind to possible solutions in our individual case.

When there's nothing left of the man you once knew as your Grandfather, you show the world what's left. It may not have shown him with dignity, but I wanted to show the world how much of an impact this disease can have on someone. My grandfather struggled with the disease for almost 5 years before passing due to an error at his nursing home. I wanted to show what it's like to find it hard to see the man you once saw.

Dear Griegs, I understand your pain and sorrow. In fact, my Dad's first grandchild (and favorite) Mark would not go to see him the last 3+ years of his life. So you are a better person. After re-thinking the video, you displayed your shock at this debiltating disease. You showed those who only are familiar with ALZ via jokes that this is no laughing matter. One can never know the depth of sorrow in watching your loved one waste away in this hideous manner.

You dealt with your grief in a public serving way. I just let mine swallow me. God bless you and grant you peace. And I apologize for my personal opinion, rather than an objective review. The subject at best is painful for us. You did the right thing!
