'Sunshine' finally made it to the dollar theater here in Louisville so I thought I'd check it out this past weekend.

Set about 50 years in the future, the nuclear furnace burning inside our Sun is dying. So Icarus 1 was dispatched with a gigantic nuclear bomb that they were supposed to detonate in the Sun's core to re-start the dying star. That mission mysteriously failed and seven years later Icarus II is sent with a second, final bomb to try the same thing. As they get closer to the Sun, they realize Icarus 1 is still orbiting, so close to the Sun that it wasn't visible to Earth observers. They decide to intercept Icarus 1, hoping that having two bombs will be better than one. That of course is when all hell breaks loose and people start dying in various and sundry ways.
The plot is suprisingly similar to Event Horizon, but whereas that earlier movie was pretty bad I found Sunshine to be decent. However I don't think it has any re-play value. I'm not going to want to watch it again, so when it comes out on DVD I see no reason to buy a copy.
But if you haven't seen it yet, it's probably worth a rent.
