I'm an avid SciFI/Fantasy fan, and for the past 17 years have mostly been a stay home wife and mother. I have a techie side, though. Then again, I'm learning I have a lot of sides!

Maybe the correlation is "Hey, I can do 'this', I wonder what would happen if I do it 'that' way?" and a new SFF book is born.

Growing up I was pretty anti-tech, and always thought I'd have a career in science as a biologist or geologist, but after getting a degree in biochemistry from Berkeley I could only get a job in tech, and have stayed there to this day.

Although I'm not a developer... I've been a tech support rep and manager, a tech writer and manager, a user-experience designer and manager, and finally a director of product design and management... I guess that's the most non-techie of tech jobs.

for me, an early love of science fiction lead to a love of all sciences. now I use various sciences and technologies in my job as a product designer and researcher.

You know you're probably right. I'm a petroleum geologist and primarily a seismic interpreter so I'm pretty much immersed in tech on a daily basis. When I'm trying to get the visualization software to behave itself with a 30 gig volume of data I just don't have time to stop every 5 minutes and call IT. Sometimes I just have to beat it into submission myself lol.

But, even before I went into geology my interest was always in the science and engineering type classes. And I've been an avid sci-fi fan since I discovered Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov at a very tender age.

I'm a mechanical engineer for a firm that does "Entertainment Engineering."

Ever see "KA," by Cirque du Soleil? I was lead mechanical engineer.

I was able to use some work I had done for "Ender's Game" tech development to help me analyze some of the moves for the main deck. In fact, when we first got the show's production drawings in, one of the engineers said, "Boothby...this looks an awful lot like scenes from that book...Ender;s Game!"

I've always been a speculative fiction fan and originally went into Secondary Education - English. Now I find myself running the servers at a university though.

I suggest a conspiracy is at work here.

I've attended enough S-F conventions to think your stereotype has some truth but it is a stereotype . Remember Ray Bradbury still uses a typewriter .
