OK, cheesiest of cheesies, but I'm interested in seeing a favorite author's list from people. No limit, not ranking required. Just mainly to help others discover new literature...
I'll probably post a list of 'masters' later, but for now, here's a shot of whom I've been reading lately:
Steven Erikson - Fantasy, the 'Malazan Empire' series. Hard to grasp initially, but once you grok it, there's nothing else like it.
S. M. Stirling - Quasi-historical fantasy. Really liked his last couple of series.
Alastair Reynolds - hard sci fi
John Scalzi - Old Man's War, et al. If you haven't read it, it's a must read!
Just read a compilation of works by Jack Vance. If you haven't read his stuff, you must. Both Sci Fi and Fantasy. The most brilliant stylist ever in the genre, by my estimate...
John Barnes - Both his space opera and his Girault series. Excellent stuff.
Whom I'm eagerly awaiting Iain Banks' new Culture book:

Just noticed Peter Hamilton has a new book coming out as well: http://www.amazon.com/Dreaming-Void-Peter-F-Hamilton/dp/0345496531/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b/002-6169418-7793609
