We all have our traditional favorites: Heinlein, Bester, and our '80's favorites: Neuromancer & Snow Crash, and our fantasy series: Jordan & Martin. But what about in recent years, say, 2001 to present what are your 5 favorite recent novels and 5 favorite short stories? (We need new stuff to read!)
I`ve been enjoying the Temeraire stories by Naomi Novik. Se in Napoleonic Europe With Britain fighting France on the sea, on land - and in the air with dragons. Great stuff, great stories.
The first is Temeraire this was folowed by "Throne of Jade" in China, then "Black Powder War" next was "Throne of Ivory".
Sadly, I haven't read enough short stories of late, since I let my Asimov's and Fantasy & Sci Fi subscriptions lapse...
As far as recent stuff, I think I need to go by author, as these guys are pretty prolific:

John Barnes
I could list so many more... almost making my list of 'new' guys are Steven Erikson (I'm reading #8 in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series atm), Greg Keyes, and S.M. Stirling...
Stephen R. Donaldson has been working on a third Thomas Covenant set. There's four to this set instead of it being another trilogy. I've got the first one - "The Runes of the Earth." The second one has been out for about a year and is called "Fatal Revenant." The first chapter of each is on his website http://www.stephenrdonaldson.com/
Does the Malazan Series get better? I just finished #2 last night. I am debating on whether to go on to book 3 or not.
OK, now that you've finished book 2, go back and re-read book 1. I'm serious. I had to do that, and it suddenly made everything make soooo much more sense.
Yes, they get better. But they are a hard slog... not quite 'Dhalgren' hard but Erikson never really bothers to explain anything, you have to figure it all out on your own.
