Now hear me out--I don't hate Harry Potter. I've read the first couple books and enjoyed them. And I've definitely enjoyed the movies.
Thing is, the ginormous success of the Harry Potter books and movies means that publishers and movie studios are inevitably going to try and find the "next" Harry Potter. It's their nature to try and squeeze everything they can out of this winning formula.
Which means for many years to come, children's fiction in particular is going to be quite full of fantasy-type books. Stuff in the vein of Harry Potter.
And the media kids get exposed to as youngsters influences the media they demand as they grow up. Which means more demand for (and supply of) fantasy-based works.
Science Fiction is going to get squeezed out in this scenario. This generation is going to tilt very strongly towards fantasy and that means inevitably less demand for science fiction.
Am I just being a negative nelly, or do you agree with the scenario I've laid out?
