It's amazing how things just jump into the public consciousness these days. The men/women behind the curtain pulling the levers are the editors of the various media outlets (Newspaper, Internet, Television, Radio).
Today's big deal in the press was a story about our Congress deciding to pass a resolution officially calling the pre WWI slaughter of Armenians by Turks as "genocide". The Turks are not amused. No wonder I am waiting for my highway funds to expand the 5 freeway,..Congress is still working on issues from 1911.
The rub is that Turkey, a key ally, objects to this name calling which comes at an inconvenient time. GWB tried to persaude Congress from inking the "nana-nana-nana parchment" but he was as successful in that endevour as he has been in other appeals to the Rotunda Roadies.
Oddly, what got much less ink but to my mind is much more significant is the October 10th 2007 bombings of the Kurds in Northern Iraq (these people can't catch a break). After being liberated from Saddam, they now have to contend with an uppity Turkish neighbor to the North. BTW, the Turks decided not to allow us access to Iraq in March 2003 driven in no small measure by the fact that they had no interest in the Kurds being liberated. Turkey wanted those folks pinned down and away from their border.
How is it that this "blame and name" stuff trumps real news?
I am very interested in history, not only as a hobbyists but also as a road map of things to repeat and things to avoid. That said, despite my penchant for historical cues, I certainly do not support the old and musty trumping the new and relevant.

I think this is a sympton of the same disease that plays "gotcha" with public figures using an ill-placed phrase. You wonder why politicians drone on and on and say nothing? It is because they are too fearful of the repercussions to just let it hang out there. One flub and your done. Winston Churchill would never have surviived todays "gotcha police" and I think that is bad for our republic.
Great Leaders are doers and doers make mistakes, but their error rate is far less than the masses which is why they are annoited as leaders.
Our current culture advocates the mistake proof candidate up to such a degree that doing nothing is now admirable. Sad state of affairs and I apologize for this ending which waned from the first topic.
So to circle back, our leaders have gone into other walks of life and the press promotes non-news over real news to further confuse, delay and detour any meaningful work by the state.
Too sad!
