Read Obama's speech in Philadelphia on race. We have quite a bit of work left to do in this country to heal the racial divide. Obama is no stranger to this debate and gave what all experts agree was a groundbreaking, intelligent assessment and a offered a clear, forward-thinking vision for where to go next. Largely ignored by the media (except for the 24 hour cycle that contained it) and completely ignored by the radical right, it will left to future generations to study.

Sadly, it was also largely ignored by a man that Obama sought to treat with some deference: Pastor Wright. When his ego clouded his vision and he used his 15 minutes of fame to continue to foster divisions and differences that Obama has clearly articulated need to change ... the ties were severed irrevocably.

Everyone on the progressive side of the debate understands that won't satisfy the hard right or others who allow their faith to cloud their vision, just as it does Pastor Wright.

Pfleger came into the church and said some things you disagree with - - and did so when Obama was out on the campaign trail, attempting to secure the Democratic nomination for President. Wasn't there, didn't hear it, wasn't consulted, didn't approve.

But Pfleger is still a "spiritual buddy" of Obama in your mind, correct? Just want to make certain you're as intractable in this position as you appear, before I hand you your hat.

Father Michael Pfleger, a fiery liberal social activist and a white reverend at an African-American church -- St. Sabina’s Catholic Church on the South Side of Chicago -- is a longtime friend and associate of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, having known him since the presidential hopeful was a community activist. In September, the Obama campaign brought Pfleger to Iowa to host one of several interfaith forums for the campaign.

Their relationship spans decades. Pfleger has given money to Obama's campaigns and Obama as a state legislator directed at least $225,000 towards social programs at St. Sabina's, according to the Chicago Tribune.
