Was pleased to note last night that the two remaining democratic candidates, though serious in thir presentations, are not devoid of that life saving--and face saving--attribute. Thank you for your service and your posting.

It seems that losing federal funds is a radical step. However, I am a liberal who believes that free speech and free enterprise are guaranteed by the constitution for everyone, not just those I agree with. I have come to distrust the military over the years but I also realize we are talking about the defense of our country. They certainly have a right to recruit anywhere in the country despite what antiwar demonstrators may think. I just hope those whom they do recruit know what they are getting into. I was recruited into the Air Force during Viet Nam and it was a case of "we will promise you anything but once you signs your ass is ours."

first off, I'm shocked there even is a recruiting office in Berkeley! are they doing much business there?

anyway, they all should know the price of getting federal funds is that the gov. has a say in what you do. organizations that refuse to comply must do without that money.

We agree it is the right of Berkeley, as represented by their elected officials, to make asses of themselves.

We agree the military, including the Marines, will defend to the death their constitutional right to be asses.

So far, so good.

But you seem to add that we, the people as represented by the duly elected federal government, should be required to fund those who actively agitate against one of the limited constitutional powers of the government.

Kes first off let me apologize to you for my fulminating post. I first read yours with my TV glasses on and they are notoriously cockeyed. Now, three hours later I come back with my Posting glasses and realize though you were directly below mine, you were not even talking to me but to the heading which FromZ posted. Though I stick, basically to what I said, I should not have broadsided you in a personal attack. Again my apology and, as Gilda Ratner once said with a sly smile---Never Mind.

Unique, Berkeley IS a loop hole. A loopy-de-loop hole and has been attracting cerebral fruit-a-the-looms from as far back as I can recall. The Great State of California does itself a disservice by continuing to FUND those cretinous wombats and I think, even in that state, a resounding cheer would go up if they actually were defunded and the campus bulldozed and rendered into something useful to society--like a parking lot.

Fromz, I did a little more research on this subject. My original intenet was to say that yes, withholding federal funds was an option but that maybe some sort of negotiation or show cause may be acceptable first. However, it appears that the city council wanted to remove the Marines for no other reason than they did not want them there. And to further the idiocy, they gave a free parking space to Code Pink in front of the recruiting station. That got me to thinking about the idiocy that I put up with in regards to my own local government and, yes, local government officials can be that stupid. I retract my previous statement about federal fund withdrawal: While I still do not trust the U.S. military, I defend their right to free speech and to being able to conduct business anywhere in the country.
