I quit my job as a computer programmer in Chicago first, then found a new job after I moved to California. At the time, the job market was very good for programmers and I did not expect that I would have any problem finding a new job - in fact it only took one month.

Looking back now, it was a very stressful move. Southern California is so different than the Chicago area that I felt at times that I had landed on a different planet. Of course, the stress I felt more likely had to do with the unique nature of Southern California, and not with relocating first, then finding a job.

The one advantage I do remember that I had was that I was able to tell employers that I already lived locally.

The disadvantage was that, as my brother pointed out, I was unemployed.

Find a job first and that way you wont stress.

I would look into the city and learn about the conditions first. How is the housing market, job market, economy of the area. It does not matter whether you have the job first or not. What happens if you get there and the company you start working for has a major layoff due to the economic conditions of the area. Learn something about where you think you are going first then start planning what you will do.

i suggest finding a job then relocating. as a general rule, no matter where you move, there you are!

'starting over' is more like an extension of where you've been.

I've moved many times over the years including a move from Australia to the US seven years ago. Now I already had a job as I work with my husband & we opened an office here. However I would recommend a couple of things - do some exploration first. Visit the places you're interested in moving to (if financially viable), learn a bit about the areas - whether they fit your lifestyle & financial situation. Are there jobs available that you are qualified for? Once you've made the decision this is where you want to move to - fine the job & then move.

I relocated 8 years ago to Texas was supposed to have a job when I arrived but by the time I got here not 3 weeks after talking to them the doors were locked. Luckily I had a backup plan and within a month was working a temp to perm job and am still with the company so I think I just lucked out.

What everyone said is true...explore the area...if you can visit before you do the move...and most importantly know that there are going to be stresses and frustrations that have to be dealt with.
