Crafty Bastards: Meet the vendors before this Saturday
If the pattern holds, Washington City Paper's Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair will bring thousands to 18th Sreet NW in Adams Morgan this Saturday, Oct. 1. Joshua Yospyn went to visit some of the vendors in advance of the festival, which will also have plenty of food and a day's worth of entertainment.
Jennifer Strunge of Baltimore-based Cotton Monster refined her "soft sculptures," the designation she prefers instead of toys or stuffed animals, in 2004 while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her thesis involved creating large-scale puppet monsters, such as the giant squid monster she wears here, and quilts with eyeballs.
