PHOTOS: Bum Rush the Boards hip-hop chess tournament

On Saturday, Words Beats and Life hosted a hip-hop chess tournament at the Columbia Heights Recreation Center. The competition, which featured six rounds of chess and interactive hip-hop workshops, focused on prepping youth for a future that includes post-secondary education.

Mazi Mutafa (in yellow), executive director of Words Beats and Life, asks competitors at the start of Saturday's "Bum Rush the Boards" chess tournament if they'll be among today's winners. This annual event, which took place at the Columbia Heights Recreation Center, was created by WBL in 2005 to "promote strategic thought and actions within the hip-hop and chess communities."
