My wife is way too clingy... I need more space.

Do's and Don'ts:

You have a right to time alone. You also have a right to be interested in devoting time to activities your spouse doesn't care for, e.g. shopping, watching or playing sports, or getting together with friends without your spouse involved.

Do remember that clinging is often a sign of insecurity. Work to reassure your spouse that you're committed to him/her, that you are not interested in anyone else.

Couch your need for time alone in the context of overall relationship health and satisfaction. It's not healthy to be utterly wrapped up in each other all the time.

Look at your relationship globally, and schedule not only time alone, but time together.

Say This:

I love you. I love spending time with you. I'm totally committed to you. I'm not interested in anyone else. But I'm also concerned about the health of our relationship. I'd like to sit down and work out a schedule that allows us to spend quality time together, but also allows us some alone time, or time with other friends.

What if one of those activities your spouse doesn't care for is sex?
