Tonight: Urban Corps' 'Tour of Duty', Zumba Fitness

Alliance Française's Urban Corps Transatlantic HIp-Hop Festival presents a performance by the French dance company KLP. Set in 1960's Brooklyn, "Tour of Duty," sounds like a battle on the field, but in actuality it's a different kind of war. A group of friends reminisce of the hardships they've had to face in the face of social, economic and cultural barriers, while simultaneously telling the story of how hip-hop began. The Washington Post writes, "Junious Brickhouse, founder of the District-based hip-hop collective Urban Artistry, is a bit skeptical about the storyline — Brooklyn? What about the South Bronx? — but suspects that the dancing will be on target. 'I’ll be honest. I think there are some things that get lost in translation...but at the end of the day, I just want to get down with some nonverbal art.'" Atlas Performing Arts Center. 8 p.m. $23.

Summer is almost here — time to work that booty while looking incredibly silly if you suffer from having no rhythm with 90 minutes of Zumba Fitness: A Party for Empowerment at The Dunes. 7 p.m. $15 online or $20 cash only at door.

Weekend Shows: An Artomatic Weekend

The month-long arts festival Artomatic opened last weekend. In addition to showcasing visual art from the area, the festival includes many musical performances as well. Since it's Memorial Day weekend, you've got plenty of time to check out some of the bands performing this weekend-- and stroll through the festival's seemingly countless exhibitions of local artists. All shows are at 1851 S. Bell Street in Arlington, at the Crystal City metro stop.

The Echo Wall (9 PM) and Wytold (8 PM)
Friday, May 25 on the Cherry Smash Stage, FREE

Local chamber-folk sextet The Echo Wall features an intriguing melange of instruments (including violin, ukulele, glockenspiel, keyboards, melodica, guitars and drums). Their sophomore album, Navigable Darkness, is due out in the fall, so you may be lucky enough to hear some new tunes at this show. Earlier in the evening is post-classical group Wytold, which features a six-string electric cello.

Bad Domes (11 PM)
Friday, May 25 on the Main Stage

If you like mash-up artists like Girl Talk, then you'll love Bad Domes. The local masher- upper has been tearing up venues like the Black Cat and has been performing monthly at DC9. Prepare to shake your booty, and remember to wear your dancing shoes. There isn't a great video to embed here, so instead, we'll point you to his web page, where you can sample dozens of his song collages.

Lorelei, Screen Vinyl Image, and Silo Halo (9 PM)
Saturday, May 26 on the Cherry Smash Stage

The bands have billed this lineup as a "Clamorous Throwdown", and they're not wrong: this trio of local shoegaze bands will feature some of the best swirling, swelling guitars in the area. The reunited trio Lorelei perfectly embodies the sound of its record label, Slumberland, which released the band's albums during its first run in the early 1990s and is slated to put out the band's new album Enterprising Sidewalks in September. Screen
Vinyl Image is a psychedelic shoegaze duo (you'd be surprised how much noise two people can make), and Silo Halo is a trio that has recently returned back to DC from a midwestern tour.

Weekend shows: Haven't I Seen You Before?

D.C. is a popular tour stop for bands heading up (or down) the East Coast, so it's not unusual for a band to play in this area multiple times in one year. This weekend features a lot of shows with bands who've played here already this year, so now's your chance to get a second helping of a band you really love -- or another chance to see a band you missed the first time around.

The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys
Friday, May 18 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, $40-55

These two groups sold out the Verizon Center back in March, and almost immediately after that show, they announced this return tour to Merriweather Post Pavilion. They're probably not going to tour together forever, so now's your chance to see the blues-rock duo the Black Keys performing with English indie-rockers the Arctic Monkeys.

Emmure et al.
Friday, May 18 at the Fillmore Silver Spring, $22

This entire lineup is a collection of metalcore bands who tour seemingly constantly: Emmure and Woe Is Me opened for We Came As Romans at Rams Head Live in April; Texas In July played the Ice Jam with August Burns Red at Sonar in January; and Like Moths To Flames opened for DRUGS at the 9:30 Club in January. If you saw any of those tours and loved the opening bands, now's your chance to see them again.

Dry the River
Saturday, May 19 at IOTA, $12

You may have seen English folk-rock band Dry the River opening for Bowerbirds at the Black Cat in March. If you didn't, you definitely missed out-- the group's hushed melancholy and lush harmonies were stunning live, and this is a great chance to see the group perform a longer, headlining set.

Saturday, May 19 at Jammin' Java, $12 advance / $15 day of show

Pop-folk singer/songwriter Carsie Blanton sold out the Black Cat's Backstage in January; her show opening for Shawn Colvin in March at the Birchmere also sold out. The Bethesda-born, Philadelphia-based singer is back in the DC area for a third time this year, playing at Jammin' Java with Dawn Landes, a singer-songwriter who played IOTA herself in January.

Upcoming shows: Mother's Day Guide

Mother's Day is Sunday! If you haven't remembered to pick up a gift for your maternal unit, don't stress: no matter what kind of music your mom is into, we've got some suggestions of shows for her special day.

Carolina Chocolate Drops
Thursday, May 10 at the Birchmere, $25

Recommended if your mom: secretly wants to learn to play the banjo. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are an old-time string band from North Carolina, whose 2010 album Genuine Negro Jig won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. In addition to banjo and guitar, the band also includes harmonica, kazoo, fiddle, and mandolin-- a good mixture of twangy instruments that complements their sound.

Mark Lanegan Band
Friday, May 11 at the 9:30 Club, $20

Recommended if your mom: is covered in tattoos. Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan has performed with a lot of different bands since his grunge days-- most recently, with Belle & Sebastian's Isobel Campbell and with English electronica group Soulsavers. He's back doing his own solo thing now, having recently released the rock album Blues Funeral, still highlighting his dark and weary vocals. He's also heavily
inked, down to every phalanx of every finger.

M3 Festival
Saturday, May 12 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, $40-$60

Recommended if your mom: still has a mess of hairspray left over from the 80s.This rock festival (now in its 4th year) kicks off on Friday night with Kix and Night Ranger, but the real jump backwards in time is at this show, which features Ratt, Warrant, and Cinderella. Here's hoping your mom doesn't still have that old leotard and legwarmers outfit.

D.R.I.
Sunday, May 13 at Empire, $17

Recommended if your mom: thinks driving on the Autobahn is just too damn slow. Punk/ thrash band D.R.I. (that's Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) was known for a time as the fastest band in the world. The Houston band hasn't released a new album since the mid-90s, but the quartet isn't exactly slowing down: they just worked with label Beer City Records to reissue some of their early albums and have not denied rumors of an 8th studio album. Most moms wouldn't be down with a D.R.I. concert, but we're hoping that yours is. (PS: please send pictures).

Weekend shows: Upcoming concerts in D.C.

D.C. has a rich local music scene with strong roots in go-go and hardcore punk. Every once in a while, though, it's nice to escape to a faraway land of different tastes — even if just for a few hours. Here are a few musical escapes that won't require a passport:

Acid Mothers Temple
Friday, May 4 at the Red Palace, $10 advance/$12 day of show

Japanese psychedelic collective Acid Mothers Temple initially formed in 1995 and has released copious albums, all under slightly varying names (Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso UFO, Acid Mothers Temple & the Cosmic Inferno, Acid Mothers Temple & the Incredible Strange Band, and so on), in the time since. Founding guitarist Kawabata Makoto started the group with a vision of creating trippy music influenced by prog and krautrock. Kawabata seems to be the only (fairly) central member of AMT, appearing in almost all of the group's incarnations surrounded by members of the collective's ever-rotating cast of collaborators.

Yacht Rock Revue
Friday, May 4 at the Hamilton, $20

The members of Atlanta's Yacht Rock Revue hail from a faraway land where leisure suits and tussled hair are the norm and bands like Hall & Oates and Steely Dan rule the airwaves. This tribute band fully embraces '70s soft-rock fare — their biography on Facebook describes them as "the music you listen to at the dentist's office while getting your teeth cleaned" — but we know you know all the words. So wake me up before you go-go; that summer breeze on the love boat to Africa is but a careless whisper of how sweet it is that love will keep us together. (Yes, that's enough earworms to last you 'til next month. You're welcome.)

CANCELED - Ane Brun
Saturday, May 5 at the Hamilton, $19.50

THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELED: Ane Brun is from Norway but has spent the last decade living in Sweden, where she recorded her latest album, It All Starts With One, with Swedish producer/songwriter Tobias Fröberg. The Scandinavian folkie was recently featured on Peter Gabriel's latest album, New Blood; when she's not behind the microphone, she's busy running her own record label, which she started with Ellekari Larsson, pianist from the band The Tiny.

UK ("Night After Night Tour 2012") featuring Eddie Jobson, John Wetton, and Terry Bozzio
Sunday, May 6 at the Baltimore SoundStage, $50

British prog-rock supergroup UK is reuniting for this one-off tour and performing in the US for the first time in over 30 years. This lineup will feature keyboardist/electric-violinist Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music, Frank Zappa), vocalist/bassist John Wetton (King Crimson), and drummer Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa). The tour was originally scheduled to stop at D.C.'s Howard Theatre on Monday night, but that show has unfortunately been cancelled, so your only chance to catch this legendary reunion tour locally is with a drive up to Baltimore. Watch a video here.
