Potomac house fire kills one, injures another

Witnesses said an overnight fire, at 8509 Scarboro Ct. in Potomac, was a smoky, destructive blaze, that took the life of it's owner, a man in his seventies.

"It woke us around 5 a.m.," says neighbor Cindy Learned. "I didn't see any flames. Just the smoke coming out, billowing from the top window there."

The victim was identified as Sung Y. Kwack, 74, of 8509 Scarboro Court.

Home video shows thick smoke, rising above the house in darkness.

A neighbor, who spotted flames through a kitchen window, called 911.

Firefighters, arriving here around 4:40 a.m., found the house interior fully aflame.

Once inside, they discovered the homeowner unconscious.

Investigators believe a pot on a stove that hadn't been turned off caused the fire.

A family friend, also in the house, escaped and was sent to the hospital.

"I think it must be a horrible shock when they hear."

Anne-Marie Doppman, who's lived across the street for years, says the deceased man's wife is in California visiting the couple's grown children.

"I know they had smoke detectors," she adds. "Whether they were on, or whether they had a battery, I'm really not sure".

Firefighters have been in the neighborhood, passing out fire safety pamphlets.

Many neighbors say they're now going to be more diligent in checking their smoke detectors.

The deceased man is remembered for his kindness and his meticulously cared-for garden.

"It's very tragic and very sad", says neighbor Andrew Weiss.

"He was very nice and made the neighborhood very beautiful."

Original story, 7 a.m.: One person is dead and another injured after a house fire in Potomac early Sunday morning, Montgomery County Fire says.

Fire and rescue units responded to the home at 8509 Scarboro Ct. at about 4:40 a.m. Fire officials say that the fire originated from a stove top in the kitchen, where the survivor said they were cooking. Officials say the fire burned for some time before being seen by a neighbor.

A sweep of the house found two men in their mid-70s, and the homeowner was found unconscious. First responders began advanced life support treatment before he was transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, where he was pronounced dead.

The other victim was taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation. He is in stable condition.

It took 65 firefighters about 20-25 minutes to control the fire, which caused about $400,000 in damage to the house and its contents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Water main break in Arlington

UPDATE (9:52 a.m.): Officials are now saying that some residents in the area of the main break will be affected, specifically in one apartment complex closest to the broken fire line.

Officials expect the break to be repaired in the next three or four hours.

UPDATE (9:04 a.m.): An official with Water Services say s that the line that broke supplies fire services, and is not a supply line. Therefore, Arlington estimates that no customers have had their water service interrupted.

The water main break is under control and no more water is flowing. Crews are on site and the line will be repaired. Officials say the line probably broke as a result of the swift change in temperature in the region.

ORIGINAL POST: Arlington Water & Sewer confirms that a water main broke near the 4500 block of South Four Mile Run Drive in Arlington overnight.

There is no estimate to when service may be restored.

Virginia State Police say a high speed chase on I-66 has ended on Rt. 29 in Fauquier County and the driver has been taken into custody. Austin Griffith resisted a traffic stop, speeding away along I-66, and later tried to escape police after his truck had been stopped. He was charged with DUI, drug possession and a felony count of eluding police.

Another driver called police around 8:30 p.m. because he was concerned about the erratic driving behavior of a red 1996 Ford pickup truck traveling west on I-66, police said in a statement. A state police trooper was able to get behind the truck and initiated a traffic stop. The pickup eventually stopped on the shoulder of I-66 at Route 29/Centerville.

As the trooper walked up to the pickup truck, the driver sped away at high speed. During the pursuit, the truck crossed into the eastbound lanes at one point, going the wrong way on I-66.

The driver of the pickup eventually got off onto Route 29. State police deployed stinger spikes across the roadway in Fauquier County. The spikes deflated all four tires and the truck came to a rolling stop on Route 29 just north of Route 600.

The driver of the pickup then fled on foot. He was apprehended without incident by state police troopers within minutes.

Austin A. Griffith, 31, of Amissville, Va., has been taken to Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He's been charged with DUI, driving on a revoked license because of a previous DUI conviction, felony count of eluding police, multiple drug possession charges, and for possessing drug paraphenalia.

Ronald Taylor, Metrobus driver, charged with negligent homicide in 2008 accident

A metro bus driver has been indicted on charges related to a 2008 deadly crash. ABC7 uncovered that Ronald Taylor's record bears a number of arrests before he was hired by Metro.

According to online court records, Taylor was arrested on a number of charges in the late 80s to early 90s, including gun and drug charges. This was long before he was hired by Metro.

ABC7 contacted Metro officials to explain why Taylor was hired despite those charges – and how he was hired again after the 2008 accident.

Reached on Thursday evening, a metro spokesperson told ABC reporter Jay Korff the transportation agency does background checks on all its employees. He said Metro will look into this matter first thing Friday.

The president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, Jackie Jeter, says that Taylor was reinstated in last June after an arbitrator ruled that WMATA didn't follow proper procedures in his firing.

"Anyone who is arrested is innocent until proven guilty," Jeter said. She added that an employee being placed out of service without pay is standard operating procedure in these situations.

Taylor was arrested Thursday morning at the Cheverly station on charges that he hit and killed a person with a Metrobus in 2008.

A grand jury charged him with negligent homicide on Tuesday. Taylor allegedly struck and killed Bartlett Tabor with his bus on Sept. 26, 2008.

Taylor allegedly ran a red light in Foggy Bottom, plowed into a tax and killed Tabor, who was in D.C. on business with his wife and children. Taylor had been on the job for just six months.

WMATA spokesman Steve Taubenkible says that Taylor had been employed by Metro from March to October of 2008 and then again from June 2010 until now. Taylor is now out of service without pay.

On Thursday, Taylor appeared in court for an initial arraignment. He was released but was required to surrender his license and take drug tests.
