Tonight: Urban Corps' 'Tour of Duty', Zumba Fitness

Alliance Française's Urban Corps Transatlantic HIp-Hop Festival presents a performance by the French dance company KLP. Set in 1960's Brooklyn, "Tour of Duty," sounds like a battle on the field, but in actuality it's a different kind of war. A group of friends reminisce of the hardships they've had to face in the face of social, economic and cultural barriers, while simultaneously telling the story of how hip-hop began. The Washington Post writes, "Junious Brickhouse, founder of the District-based hip-hop collective Urban Artistry, is a bit skeptical about the storyline — Brooklyn? What about the South Bronx? — but suspects that the dancing will be on target. 'I’ll be honest. I think there are some things that get lost in translation...but at the end of the day, I just want to get down with some nonverbal art.'" Atlas Performing Arts Center. 8 p.m. $23.

Summer is almost here — time to work that booty while looking incredibly silly if you suffer from having no rhythm with 90 minutes of Zumba Fitness: A Party for Empowerment at The Dunes. 7 p.m. $15 online or $20 cash only at door.

Weekend Shows: An Artomatic Weekend

The month-long arts festival Artomatic opened last weekend. In addition to showcasing visual art from the area, the festival includes many musical performances as well. Since it's Memorial Day weekend, you've got plenty of time to check out some of the bands performing this weekend-- and stroll through the festival's seemingly countless exhibitions of local artists. All shows are at 1851 S. Bell Street in Arlington, at the Crystal City metro stop.

The Echo Wall (9 PM) and Wytold (8 PM)
Friday, May 25 on the Cherry Smash Stage, FREE

Local chamber-folk sextet The Echo Wall features an intriguing melange of instruments (including violin, ukulele, glockenspiel, keyboards, melodica, guitars and drums). Their sophomore album, Navigable Darkness, is due out in the fall, so you may be lucky enough to hear some new tunes at this show. Earlier in the evening is post-classical group Wytold, which features a six-string electric cello.

Bad Domes (11 PM)
Friday, May 25 on the Main Stage

If you like mash-up artists like Girl Talk, then you'll love Bad Domes. The local masher- upper has been tearing up venues like the Black Cat and has been performing monthly at DC9. Prepare to shake your booty, and remember to wear your dancing shoes. There isn't a great video to embed here, so instead, we'll point you to his web page, where you can sample dozens of his song collages.

Lorelei, Screen Vinyl Image, and Silo Halo (9 PM)
Saturday, May 26 on the Cherry Smash Stage

The bands have billed this lineup as a "Clamorous Throwdown", and they're not wrong: this trio of local shoegaze bands will feature some of the best swirling, swelling guitars in the area. The reunited trio Lorelei perfectly embodies the sound of its record label, Slumberland, which released the band's albums during its first run in the early 1990s and is slated to put out the band's new album Enterprising Sidewalks in September. Screen
Vinyl Image is a psychedelic shoegaze duo (you'd be surprised how much noise two people can make), and Silo Halo is a trio that has recently returned back to DC from a midwestern tour.

Weekend shows: Haven't I Seen You Before?

D.C. is a popular tour stop for bands heading up (or down) the East Coast, so it's not unusual for a band to play in this area multiple times in one year. This weekend features a lot of shows with bands who've played here already this year, so now's your chance to get a second helping of a band you really love -- or another chance to see a band you missed the first time around.

The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys
Friday, May 18 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, $40-55

These two groups sold out the Verizon Center back in March, and almost immediately after that show, they announced this return tour to Merriweather Post Pavilion. They're probably not going to tour together forever, so now's your chance to see the blues-rock duo the Black Keys performing with English indie-rockers the Arctic Monkeys.

Emmure et al.
Friday, May 18 at the Fillmore Silver Spring, $22

This entire lineup is a collection of metalcore bands who tour seemingly constantly: Emmure and Woe Is Me opened for We Came As Romans at Rams Head Live in April; Texas In July played the Ice Jam with August Burns Red at Sonar in January; and Like Moths To Flames opened for DRUGS at the 9:30 Club in January. If you saw any of those tours and loved the opening bands, now's your chance to see them again.

Dry the River
Saturday, May 19 at IOTA, $12

You may have seen English folk-rock band Dry the River opening for Bowerbirds at the Black Cat in March. If you didn't, you definitely missed out-- the group's hushed melancholy and lush harmonies were stunning live, and this is a great chance to see the group perform a longer, headlining set.

Carsie Blanton & Dawn Landes
Saturday, May 19 at Jammin' Java, $12 advance / $15 day of show

Pop-folk singer/songwriter Carsie Blanton sold out the Black Cat's Backstage in January; her show opening for Shawn Colvin in March at the Birchmere also sold out. The Bethesda-born, Philadelphia-based singer is back in the DC area for a third time this year, playing at Jammin' Java with Dawn Landes, a singer-songwriter who played IOTA herself in January.

These and other show listings can be found on ShowListDC.
