  • Video of the Anacostia River's mysterious substance

    August 18, 2011 - 12:35 pm

After fears that an oil spill had polluted the Anacostia River, the U.S. Coast Guard tested the water and found no oil whatsoever. Now they think it's just silt and mud caused by recent rainstorms, which is both a boring result and a great relief. Tests are expected back later today, but in the meantime, here's an aerial video of the macchiato river shot by the Coast Guard.

  • The city wants someone to build a movie theater in Anacostia

    September 16, 2011 - 10:52 am

For decades now, the number of movie theaters in D.C. — and throughout the country — has consistently declined, which explains why even the opening of a three-screen art-house cinema in the basement of an apartment building, as occurred last year, is a big deal among cinephiles. With the addition of the West End Cinema, the District now has seven theaters, only three of which are conventional megaplexes.

  • South Capitol Street final EIS disappoints

    April 20, 2011 - 07:30 am

For several years now, DDOT has been working on the Environmental Impact Statement for the South Capitol Street Project. This project would redesign South Capitol Street from the Capitol grounds across the river to Firth Sterling, as well as some streets like Suitland Parkway and New Jersey Ave. The project was never supposed to have much for cyclists (the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is part of a separate project) but much of what it was to have has been scaled back.

  • The Yards Park grand opening

    September 9, 2010 - 01:39 pm

Many of us have had our eye on the Capitol Riverfront, the area along the Anacostia River just five blocks south of the U.S. Capitol, for awhile now. The Nats have been settled in for a few years, so the big question is, what’s next? Historically, the Washington Navy Yard anchored the neighborhood, but these [...]

  • Anacostia on Aljazeera

    September 28, 2010 - 04:47 pm

This summer, Aljazeera English filmed a documentary feature on the changes coming east of the Anacostia River, specifically in the Anacostia and Barry Farm neighborhoods (although there is some footage of Congress Heights as well). The feature, called "There Goes the Neighborhood", is a good look into the current state of Anacostia, and shows it from a few different angles and perspectives (including my own) on different sides of the economic and racial spectrum. What do you think? Is this an ho
