Joe Witte Meteorologist
Joe Witte started his career as a glaciologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, working on the ice of South Cascade Glacier, in the high Cascade mountains of Washington State. He was the principal investigator on his Masters thesis in Atmospheric Sciences on ice island T-3 in the Arctic Ocean on his study of infrared radiation from the Arctic Ocean as well as the density of ice crystals in the Arctic clouds, winter and summer seasons. He worked for a year at NOAA'S Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton, NJ.
Witte has worked as chief meteorologist at TV stations in Seattle, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and New York City. He spent 20 years with NBC News Today, forecasting national weather as well as weather effects on business for CNBC for 4 years. He has reported on his flights into the center of 3 hurricanes. He was co-winner for local TV Emmy awards for team coverage of the Blizzard of 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Joe was weekend forecaster for NewsChannel 8 and WJLA ABC 7 from 2003 to 2008.
Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, Joe is often outdoors in the weather elements: skiing, climbing, biking, etc. He is currently working on a PhD in science communication at George Mason University.
