Janol Apin is a brilliantly creative photographer with an eye for transit. He glanced at the Métro system of Paris and what did he see? Not merely trains and platforms but a whole world wrapped up in cultural imagination and his own lens. He shot a whole set of photos in which people acted out literal interpretations of the Métro station names. Would such a project work in the D.C. Metro?

The June 1932 cover of Popular Science featured one bus that was truly iconic — an orange underwater sightseeing bus that could take passengers under the depths of the ocean to see the strange watery world underneath. Inside the many bus windows are passengers' faces filled with awe, tourists to the marine life around them. "Ocean Marvels Seen From Underwater Bus," the cover boldly announces below the illustration.
