Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial schedule announced, D.C. residents get sneak preview
Comment
We get first dibs! Mayor Vince Gray has announced the District's event schedule for the week leading up to the Aug. 28 dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and it includes a sneak peek of the memorial for D.C. residents. Also: yet another rally demanding that we get some representation with our taxes.

Martin Luther King Memorial opens today. Like, right now
Comment
Today is not the day everyone in D.C. has been waiting for. That day is tomorrow, when, we were told, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial would open to District residents (later amended to include our suburban neighbors and, well, anyone else who happens to be in town). But, in fact, the memorial opens today, at 11 a.m. As in, right now. Shhhh, don't tell anyone!

The MLK Memorial is done, here's a photo
Comment
We all can't wait to see the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, but let's be honest: It's going to be a madhouse at the Tidal Basin next week. You could attend "DC Residents Day" on Tuesday and jostle with suburbanites from Maryland and Virginia, or you could wait until the official dedication on Aug. 28 — and compete with tens of thousands of camera-toting tourists. Hell, you'd be better off watching from the top of the Washington Monument.

Mayor Vince Gray wants you at the Full Democracy Freedom Rally
Comment
Lost somewhat in the news that next Tuesday's "DC Residents Day" — a sneak peek of the Martin Luther King Memorial — will not, in fact, be restricted to D.C. residents, is an event the following Saturday titled "DC Full Democracy Freedom Rally and March." The cause, of course, is D.C. autonomy — taxation with representation — and Mayor Vince Gray, who's been arrested at these things before, is demanding the attendance of all you complacent slackers.

MLK Memorial preview to be open to everyone, not just D.C. residents
Comment
D.C. residents were told they'd get an exclusive preview of the Martin Luther King Memorial next Tuesday, but so many people demanded tickets that Mayor Vince Gray was forced to open up the sneak peek to everyone. The day, Aug. 23, is being called "D.C. Residents Day," but we're not feeling very special if we have to share it with Virginians and Marylanders.
