  • U Street, King Street named best streets in America 2011

    10/4/11 9:51 AM Comment

Two area streets — D.C.'s U Street and Alexandria's King Street — are famous locally for being oppressively crowded on weekends, but now they're famous nationally as two of the top 10 great streets in America. Which means now they'll be even more oppressively crowded on weekends.

  • GWU, Catholic University land on list of top party dorms

    10/3/11 12:39 PM Comment

By now, incoming freshman have already gotten settled in their respective dorms, and more importantly, learned which dorms are the go-tos for Friday night revelry. But does your dorm make the list?

  • Ben's Chili Bowl dropped from manliest food list

    9/29/11 1:59 PM Comment

D.C. will not be represented on the list of "Manliest restaurants," Eater.com's tally of regional eats that boost testosterone levels. The District staple — now available at two of the three sporting venues in the region — was nominated last month for the award. Instead, the Mid-Atlantic region's digestible dude-i-tude  will be epitomized by Primanti Brothers.

  • American, GWU among top 10 colleges in internship experience

    9/27/11 3:27 PM Comment

If you want to work on Capitol Hill, you go to Georgetown University. But what if you want to work without having to worry about silly things like paychecks and self-respect? Then George Washington and American universities are the schools for you!

  • D.C. traffic congestion is worst in U.S., say Texas wonks

    9/27/11 9:51 AM Comment

You'd think that Los Angeles, that car-centric metropolis of smog, would have the worst traffic congestion in the United States. But no, it's us.

  • Forbes 400 richest Americans list is out, and Dan Synder barely made it

    9/22/11 10:55 AM Comment

The Forbes 400 — the list of people either born in insanely rich families, or who became insanely rich through luck or ruthlessness — has come out, and Dan Snyder just made the cut.

  • Arlington, D.C. named best cities to live in for 2011

    9/21/11 12:45 PM Comment

When it comes to national rankings of U.S. cities, D.C. and its surrounding cities are usually lumped together. But the latest page-view bait from Businessweek about "America's 50 Best Cities" singles out Arlington and the District separately, placing both in the top 10.

  • D.C. ranked 18th best foodie destination in the U.S.

    9/16/11 10:57 AM Comment

One of the things D.C. never lacks is new restaurants, and we're home to a number of famous chefs and justifiably expensive restaurants, so it should come as no surprise that we're a destination for foodies. We're not the destination in the U.S., according to Travel + Leisure — that belongs to New Orleans — but a respectable 18th.

  • U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges 2012: Other things we learned

    9/14/11 7:50 PM Comment

Yesterday, like every other media outlet in the country, we covered the release of U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges 2012. However, in focusing on the main event — the rankings for national universities and liberal arts colleges — we overlooked the lesser-known schools in the Washington area that landed on one or more niche lists:

  • Kimpton's Hotel Palomar named 4th most pet-friendly hotel

    9/14/11 4:02 PM Comment

Next time your visiting relatives insist on staying with you "because hotels don't allow pets," point them to this: D.C.'s Hotel Palomar ranked fourth on TripAdvisor's list of the most pet-friendly hotels in America. The Dupont Circle spot offers free pet beds and disposable pick-up bags, and pets get a treat during the nightly wine hour. "Free" is a relative term, though; a room costs anywhere between $180 to more than $500 per night.

  • D.C. poverty rate is third-highest in the nation, says U.S. Census

    9/14/11 12:49 PM Comment

The latest statistics from the Census Bureau are out, and they're really depressing. Perhaps you'd rather look at photos of this Persian onager foal. No? OK then: 15.1 percent of Americans, or 46.2 million, were living in poverty last year — the highest rate since 1993 — and D.C. itself is even worse off.

  • U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges 2012 ranks Johns Hopkins, Georgetown in top 25

    9/13/11 5:11 PM Comment

U.S News & World Report has released its eagerly anticipated, hotly debated, and otherwise adverb-inducing rankings of the country's best colleges, and they're giving those annoying-but-promising kids at Georgetown University another excuse to walk around town with their chins held uncomfortably high in the air. The school fell one spot to 22nd, but beat out all others in the immediate D.C. area. Here's how all the region's schools fared.

  • John Wall's first pitch at Nationals Park was third-worst ever, says Mancave Daily

    9/13/11 3:01 PM Comment

The sight of John Wall standing on top of the pitcher's mound at Nationals Park after an incredible rookie season is one that we'll never forget. Unfortunately, we'll never forget it because Wall spiked the ball a few feet in front of him. The rest of the world may not let us forget it, either.

  • Five Guys is the best fast-food restaurant in the country, says marketing firm

    9/2/11 4:08 PM Comment

Five Guys, home of the second-best French fries in the country, has topped a nationwide survey of "consumers' favorite quick-service restaurant," but the self-promoting marketing firm that put this thing together, Market Force, decided to mess with the results by adjusting them for the total number of restaurants operated by each chain. After that statistically questionable maneuver, Five Guys fell to third place, behind Chick-fil-A and Panera Bread. The fix is in, obviously.

  • D.C. drivers are the worst in the country, says Allstate

    9/1/11 11:50 AM Comment

We know that D.C. has the stupidest drivers in the nation, so it comes as no surprise that we ranked dead last — 193 of 193 — on Allstate's "best drivers" list, with Baltimore right behind us. While this might seem like another frivolous list from a company looking for free publicity, it's actually based on data about the frequency of collisions for the average driver.

  • D.C. is the worst city at coping with weather, says Farmers' Almanac

    8/31/11 4:21 PM Comment

What many of us have long suspected has finally been confirmed: D.C. is the worst at coping with bad weather. The Farmer's Almanac ranked us number one on a list of "ten cities where weather can bring things to a screeching halt."

  • D.C. colleges rank high in future politicians and computer geeks, not prettiness

    8/31/11 11:30 AM Comment

Newsweek, the aptly named magazine that prints news once a week, has published its 2011 college rankings, which rates student bodies on everything from their brains to, well, the students' bodies. We regret to inform incoming freshman that no local school made the "horniest" or "most beautiful" lists, but with 20 top-25 lists, there were plenty of questionable accolades to go around.

  • D.C. is seventh-best in U.S. for recent college graduates

    8/30/11 1:15 PM Comment

It's no secret that D.C. is becoming a lot younger, but according to a new, self-promotional survey, it's also a good place to get started right out of college. Using data on housing costs and the number of entry-level jobs, the rankings by CareerRookie.com and Apartments.com placed the District seventh in the country. But the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment — $1,679, they claim — was the highest in their top 10, which must mean we have an obscene number of low-paying jobs for smart young people.
