Washington Post's Ned Martel wears the hipster glasses he mocks
Comment
Today the Washington Post published a long column titled, "Are hipster glasses over? How they went from geek to chic to weak," in which writer Ned Martel, employing nearly 2,000 words, announces that "big, chunky" glasses are out. His evidence: After being ribbed by reporters, White House press secretary Jay Carney "lost" his new pair of "square-rimmed, big-lensed, chunky-framed glasses," as Martel describes them. Want to guess what type of glasses Martel wears?

Daily Mail rewrites Washington Post story, then asks writer for photo
Comment
The Daily Mail pushes the limits of news aggregation. While most of us in this business stick with a story's essentials and provide linked attribution, the London paper is not above a full, transparent rewrite of another article — as it did with Steve Hendrix's excellent Post article about a F-16 fighter pilot sent on a kamikaze mission on 9/11 to take down the airliner, United 93, that ended up crashing in Pennsylvania.

George Washington University stops giving away free newspapers that no one wants
Comment
When you pay $220,000 in tuition over four years, as George Washington University students do, you expect a few amenities in return, like fancy dorms, awesome parties, easy classes and, most importantly, free newspapers. But that last perk is no more, as the administration has cut its daily delivery of the Post, New York Times, and USA Today. A spokesman for the latter paper is in denial about the reason why.

Washington Nationals coupons and the Great Beer Scam of Sept. 2, 2011
Comment
Last Friday, the Post ran a two-page advertisement for the Washington Nationals that wrapped around the sports section and contained eight coupons for food and drinks during the Labor Day weekend homestand. The two offers for that night's game, which I'd already decided to attend: two-for-one hot dogs, and half-price Miller Light drafts.

Jose Antonio Vargas' revealed his immigration secret before Times article
Comment
Jose Antonio Vargas, the former Post reporter who recently revealed — in the New York Times, because the Post, oddly, passed on the opportunity — that he's an undocumented immigrant, had told his secret to around 50 people a month before the Times published his story. Not a single one of them, including a journalist, leaked the news.

Courtland Milloy's Washington Post column inspires racially charged debate
Comment
Much as TBD pokes fun at the Post now and then, we must admit that the paper sets the standard for D.C. journalism. Its local and national coverage is sound, its bloggers are superb, and its columnists — especially Courtland Milloy — are nothing if not provocative. But the commenters? Not so much.
