The race for D.C. Council chair has been overshadowed by the juicier mayoral and councilmember contests. No fascinating racial dynamics, no name mix-ups, no fence drama, no Sex and the City. Even the debates between Vincent Orange and Kwame Brown have failed to produce fireworks. In fact on this morning’s debate on TBD TV, the only moments of excitement in the 60 minutes of tedium came when the candidates produced props. The List salutes the best moments of inanimate objects in the Council chair’s debate.

  1. Most animated: Two papers stapled together.

Orange waves around these unidentified papers and declares: “He filed these documents! He has surpluses!”

  2. Best comeback: Newspaper clipping.

Following host Bruce DePuyt’s reading of the Post’s endorsement of Orange, Brown pulls out his endorsement from The Current and reads it.

  3. Biggest zinger: Bank statement.

Orange pulls out his bank statement and says Brown should do the same. SNAP.

  4. Most dazzling visual display: Ping-pong-sized ring.

Is it jade? Turquoise? Whatever that rock on Kwame Brown’s finger is, it’s more interesting than that thing he’s saying about his accountant.
