Washingtonians display wonderfully peculiar behavior during snow. They wouldn't dream of purchasing an ice scraper for their cars (one colleague admits to The List that she has used a high heel to get the ice off her windshield) but they sure know how to stock up their fridge at the hint of snow. Not that this wasn't a legitimate snow storm (up to 10 inches were recorded in some areas), but judging from the empty shelves at the Potomac Avenue Harris Teeter, locals were preparing for the apocalypse. What were they stocking up on? Bread, half and half, and romaine. Lots of romaine.

Bottled and distilled water

Carleathia isn't concerned about the water supply becoming contaminated during the snow storm, but is stocking up on bottled water anyway. "I really don't like drinking tap water," she says. -
Spring mix

Spring mix dominates the salad bar as the lettuce blend of choice during snow times. -
Bread

"Bread," says Mary. "I'm stocking up on bread." Any other key items to weathering the storm? "Hot dogs." -
Crunchy Cheetos

Grace says chips are her snowed-in must-have. "Ruffles. Cheddar and sour cream. And Sprite." -
Grapefruit juice
-
Frozen pizza

Mary can't explain the run on frozen pizza and says she isn't buying it especially for the snow. "It's just something to do," she says. -
Half and half
-
Romaine

Only one shopper, a vegetarian named Reggie, professed to be stocking up on veggies, yet the romaine has been ravaged. -
Bounty

On-sale Bounty flies off the shelves; high-minded recycled paper towels remain.

I wonder how many of the idiots clogging the roads Wednesday evening were just trying to get to the store, so they could buy everything in sight. I was trying to get home, I left Arlington at 5, and got home in Manassas at 9. My wife was waiting for me, with no power, since it went of at 6.

No wonder the "two person" subway seats aren't large enough anymore.
