If Congress can’t decide on a federal budget by the end of the day, the federal government will be shut down. Until it’s up and running again, non-essential and non-emergency services will be suspended, or working with skeletal staff numbers. The District stands to lose $1.5 million to $5.5 million per week, according to the Washington Post. Here’s a few things you should expect (stock up on the bottled water and duct tape now).
-
A delay on your refund
Tax refunds will be delayed for people submitting their taxes after the shutdown, and for those whose refunds weren’t processed prior to the shutdown. This time, it really paid to be early....
-
Most parking enforcement will be suspended
This might actually be a benefit for those driving in the District. It will be a free-for-all to see who will can stay in the two-hour restricted spots the longest.
-
The Cherry Blossom Festival will be rerouted
The annual Cherry Blossom Parade and Gala, an event permitted by the National Park Service and scheduled for Saturday, April 9, will be taking a new route, between 7th Street and 14th Street. A much shorter route than originally scheduled, it will be interesting to see how 500,000 tourists cram themselves into the space. This item originally reported in error that the parade would be canceled.
-
The DMV will close
No drivers licenses, car tag renewals, or other Department of Motor Vehicle services will be provided during the shutdown. This means lines and waits will be really long when service resumes, quite a switch from traditional DMV service.
-
The Smithsonian and all of its facilities will be closed to the public, including the National Zoo
Prepare for an influx of tourists at the non-traditional sites, wandering around with a Metro map and a confused look in their eyes.
-
The University of the District of Columbia will be closed, as well as all D.C. Public Libraries
UDC students and those looking to use the District’s public library facilities are getting a rough deal, as the university and library facilities would be shut down for the duration of the federal government’s debacle.
-
Trash collection will be delayed
Ready your Glade plug-ins, trash collection in the District will be suspended for at least a week. It could resume at some point, as the federal government makes allowances for public safety. Street sweeping will still be postponed, however.

Well I guess like everything else in government- the shut down only effects normal people. To bad, I was really hoping that we would get rid of the corrupt scum in congress, and the senate, not to mention the shill in the oval office and replace them with real Americans instead of corporate politicians who only care about the corporations that funded their campaign or political favors that will further their criminal activity in government. It sure would be nice to require that all government workers have to take a lie detector test before they start work again, to find out if they have made any deals, laws, regulations, etc that destroy, infringe upon, or harm American's rights, liberties, and freedoms, if they don't pass, they don't serve. Although I guess America would be without a government if that were the case.
